There's a lot of misinformation floating around about the safety of sun baking. We separate fact from fiction.
Lie: Tanning is the easiest way to soak up on vitamin D.
Tan Truth: The "sunshine vitamin" is important, but experts only recommend limited exposure to the sun - about two to 10 minutes a day. Also, get your vitamin D from supplements and milk.
Lie: Tanning doesn't promote skin ageing.
Tan Truth: UV exposure speeds up the accumulation of DNA mutations in the skin, promoting premature aging. So, wear broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 15, avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and three p.m., and apply sunscreen every 30 minutes.
Lie: Tanning on a cloudy day is okay since you can't get a sunburn.
Tan Truth: The UV radiation is partially reduced, but the cumulative effects of exposure to the sun can still wreak havoc on your skin. Even on cloudy days, stay protected with sunscreen.
